The Bring Your Own Database (BYOD) feature in D365 F&O provides a straightforward way to push entity data out of the application and into an external database for reporting and integration.

Released with Platform Update 2, BYOD allows you to export data (via data entities) into an external Azure SQL Database where denormalised and aggregated data can be easily accessed for reporting, BI, or integration purposes. Export can be done via full push (all data) or incremental push (only changed records).

Recommended scenarios for BYOD include:

  • Building a custom data warehouse
  • Analytical tools that require direct SQL access
  • Batch integration with other systems
  • Legacy integration solutions that need to be adapted to support D365

Note (2025): For new implementations, Microsoft now recommends Synapse Link for Dataverse (formerly Export to Data Lake) as the preferred approach for exporting D365 F&O data to Azure for analytics and reporting. BYOD remains supported but is considered a legacy option.
