D365 F&O Connector for Time Tracking & Expense Management (Part II)

This is the second video in our series on a purpose-built connector for Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, designed to help businesses connect with external time tracking and expense management web apps. The connector can also be extended to other similar systems or used for bespoke integrations.

In this presentation, I demonstrate a scenario where an external time tracking system is connected to D365 F&O in order to record customer bills within D365 F&O ledgers, with minimal configuration and implementation effort required on the D365 side. This approach allows you to record and manage time and expenses externally from Dynamics, and only periodically generate and integrate bills in the form of free text invoices — with appropriate application of financial dimensions and ledger posting rules in Dynamics.

Solution Overview

The connector enables businesses to:

  • Record and manage time & expenses externally from Dynamics 365
  • Periodically generate and integrate bills as free text invoices into D365 F&O
  • Automatically apply financial dimensions and ledger posting rules
  • Extend to other systems or use for bespoke integrations

Architecture

The solution is built on the Microsoft Azure platform, demonstrating how to create a reusable integration service that anyone can consume on a subscription model by simply connecting to the APIs and installing a few custom-built extensions within D365 F&O.

The solution leverages Azure Logic Apps and custom APIs to bridge the gap between external time tracking platforms and Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, enabling seamless data flow without heavy customisation on the D365 side.
